first drawing of 2013...yay!!!

I've finally decided on an art goal for this year. One new picture a week. This is doable and the practice will definitely help. I had a slow start in just coming up with a goal, so here we are in the third week of the year and I've only completed one drawing. It's a start though.
Anyway, what I'm happy about with this one is her lips, eye and nose...her face has beauty and character without looking cookie cut out beautiful. I'm most disappointed with her hair (which oddly enough is usually my strong suit). I ended up cropping the drawing because I really didn't like how the hair on her right side was laying. Also, I think the bangs covering her right eye are too heavy so I may rework that a bit. Any tips would be awesome.

  1. looks good to me. although if you want to look more natural, you can shorten the eyelashes. I find the longer the lashes, the less-natural the eyes will look but that's just me. I like her smile, it is well drawn.

thanks for dropping by my blog. have a great day.

  2. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

This drawing has great potential! It could use a bit more contrast. Pretty!

I wanted to let you know that you happen to be a "no reply blogger" meaning when I get an email saying that you've comment on a post of mine, I cannot hit reply and talk to you via email. It's tough (it's not just me, it for anyone who you comment on their blog!). Anyhow, if you'd like to fix it check out my blog post: http://blog.adriennerose.me/2013/01/hey-no-one-replies-to-me.html

    1. Hi Adrienne
I loved going through your blog. I've even written down a bunch of the books you've suggested to see if my library has them. And, thanks for the comment. I'm trying to make this year about finding more time to draw so I can get better. I'm looking forward to trying some of the "100" exercises you've been working on.

Also, thanks for the info about the "no reply". I've changed it now.

  4. I think you MUST stick to your convistion about drawing every week! This sketch is wonderful, especially like the perspective, so nice, looking up in a very shy way...very pretty! Can't wait to see more!

    1. Hi Denise
Thank you for your kind words. Sadly, I've already not stuck to my plan of a weekly drawing. I just need a few more hours in each day...lol. Once I start a drawing I really have a hard time putting it down til I'm finished...this is something I know I need to change because unfortunately, it means I never seem to have enough time to even pick up my pencils.

I was back on your blog again today and I have to say I really love your work. Everything is so beautiful and seems to have so much meaning. Very inspirational.

  6. I think she's so cute - and I thought the layout was intentional rather than cropped. When you are this good - it's a shame, you don't manage to do more - but hey - I get it completely.

    1. thanks Jean...
You know, the sad thing is that I'm sure I have at least an hour a day to devote to art but procrastination is my issue. Once I start a piece I don't like to put it down til I'm done, so if I don't have a good 5 hours to sit and play, I tend not to pick up my pencils at all. I am working on that though :)

    1. Thanks Gabbi. I enjoyed going through your blog too. Your "faces" pieces are so sweet.

I think it's a great idea that you are doing some online courses. I think I'm going to look into trying something too. I want to work with colour but I think before I try doing my normal style of work I'd like to do something with simpler lines/less shading and detail to start getting confident with brushes and markers.

Your "my life lately" post is very similar to how I feel. It's awesome that you've started follow through on new art. I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you do.
