Yes, I sucketh at resolutions...

So it's the 10th week of the year, which means I should have 10 drawings done. Um, no...this is my 2nd.  My only true excuse is procrastination. I'm gonna keep working on that.

This is a drawing I've done for an auction that a friend asked me to participate in. I don't have all the details but she's a good friend so I was quick to say yes. Plus it was good for me to have a drawing goal with a time limit. Apparently this is a sample that I post and if someone bids on me then I work out something with them and draw what they want. The only requirement for the sample was it had to be related to The Vampire Diaries. My favourite would be Elijah but until the new series starts I think he wouldn't be as popular. So I went for a pic of the actor who plays his brother, Klaus.

The pic with the original photo is unblended and I had to tweak it a bit. I'm happy with the final drawing, though I wish the eyes were a bit more hooded. Not going to change it up anymore though.

  1. As Warhol would say BEE-YOU-TEE-FULL! I love the softness in your technique and how you know when to stop. The eyes jump out at you, as they should in portraits. They need to speak and yours say a lot. The smile is also sweet and adds to his beautiful expression. Good job.

PS - Let me know if you want to sketch another celebrity and I'll join you. Your pick. Just let me know on my blog. I love a challenge! :)

  2. Thanks Ileana. I will definitely take you up on that offer. I'll start looking for some ideas soon and let you know. Right now I really want to do some sketches of the Green Man... maybe even in colour. GASP! I was just reading about some amazing coloured pencils that blend beautifully with a brush and water. I may have to invest in a couple of greens and yellows to try for this project.

    Also thanks for following me.

    1. Thanks for dropping by Tammie Lee. Yes it was helpful for me to have made a commitment to someone to get this drawn. I wish I was as motivated to keep commitments to myself.

I looking forward to seeing your next piece. I find myself looking at your art often. It truly does leave me with a sweet, calm feeling.

  4. I love the wax pastels, if you haven't tried them. They look like crayons, work like colored pencils and when dipped in water look like watercolor...the best of both media. Of course, nothing can compare to the Verithin pencils (good for detail work on portrait drawings). I need to get back to them soon.

Right now I'm working on Marilyns and a few drawings for a show I plan to participate in next month. I'd like to experiment more with graphite, which takes lots and lots of patience.

    1. Thanks Kelly. I love drawing faces but I really need to try new things. I'm so attracted to the colours on other blogs I see (like yours). I really think I need to work more in that direction. I just find that a pencil can do a lot in terms of creating shade/texture and it's easier to fix mistakes, but when I add colour it takes away from the realism that I've worked for. I think I just need start trying different styles of drawing and see if something else clicks too.

  6. I think it is an excellent example of your work - you obviously take much more care than I do. Someone out there will be thrilled to bits - I just hope they provide an interesting portrait for you.

    1. Thanks Jean. I'm excited to try something that someone else wants but also a bit nervous because I find if the topic doesn't click with something in me, then I do get as great of a result.

I've just started my GreenMan drawing, which is something different for me. I may even make a copy when I'm done to add colour too...eek!
